Life is a Backlog

library

It’s been a while since my last actual blog post to go beyond mere update status or beyond predictions for some sport or another. I will not say I am necessarily back in the swing of things, as I am still acclimating to being a part of civilization again and not staying predominately in the outdoors and enjoying everything Mother Nature has on display to offer. I will, however, say that I hope to be getting more content out here and there despite having a busy ‘back-to-work’ schedule to deal with myself.

In many ways, the title of this particular post stems from the fact that moments throughout life strike me as not too dissimilar to a person trudging through a lengthy backlog- of any sort. There are certain goals you have in mind such as completing the next game on the list, and sometimes that happens but at the same time sometimes it’s pushed further and further into the future. For me, writing can often be like that. I’ve written three new manuscripts this year and yet I’ve struggled to fairly accommodate my passion for game journalism and writing reviews as well. It’s always been a balancing act for me where other priorities in life have been concerned, and I’ve done a poor job of it lately.

Not all hope is lost of course, as I am here now. I’m never too far from the front-lines myself and have been on the lookout through various sources for upcoming news and information of course as well. While I tend to steer clear of reviews now if not for one particular reason, then for the fact that I’ve written a plethora over the years and am now burnt out- I will not say that you won’t ever see me write one again. I’ll always be eternally intrigued by being able to generate my own thoughts concerning topical pieces, so of course some thought blogs may be the evolution and future of my editorials and reviews melded together.

I write most of my actual non-blog content offline and anonymously. Not because I have no wish to share with people I know appreciate what works I do share online and publicly, but for the sake of sharing content with an unknown audience as an unknown benefactor for the purpose of receiving unbiased feedback. That being said, I may or may not start sharing some more of my creative projects here in actuality although I warn you for the most part my short fiction is a tad dark and not always the most appropriate of subjects. I won’t compare myself to any “great” authors, but I won’t steer clear from the slight supernatural-horror niche that typically accompanies even the most benign of my works.

All in all, I’ve been lurking in the shadows for the past week or so, soaking up and absorbing the sights and sounds of online communities in order to get back into the thick of things. So if you haven’t heard much from me for awhile but you’ve seen me occasionally commenting or otherwise enjoying content here and there, I’m either fresh off of an important trip or fresh off of a lengthy period of business and busyness. I look forward to seeing what you all write and read in the future, as that is of course one of the most interesting and important aspects of my own life. Cheers, all.

The Best Deals With Gold, Week of 21NOV

[As Originally Read on GIO.]

Last week I detailed some of the best Xbox deals with Gold and digital downloads. This week I will be highlighting some newer deals as well as timely Black Friday additions. Let’s go ahead and see what’s in store for the week then shall we?

Join Xbox Live Gold- $1 ON BLACK FRIDAY

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon- FREE (Until 11/30)

Did you like Far Cry 3? Do you like open world adventure games? Do you like gritty and nuanced science fiction adventures? Are you even human? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may want to check out the standalone downloadable Far Cry adventure that turns komodo dragons into giant laser dinosaurs and enemies into cybernetic juggernauts. I’m not even kidding. Go out there and have some fun wreaking havoc upon their poor souls.

Forza Horizon 2 / Bundle / Forza Motorsport 5- 60% OFF

Each of these three items- the Forza Horizon 2 10th Anniversary Edition, Forza Horizon 2 Bundle, and Forza Motorsport 5 are 60% off respectively. If you’re a fan of the series or racing games and sims in general, then this might be more than worthwhile to checkout. As an additional note, there is also a Forza Horizon 2 / Forza Motorsport 6 Bundle available at a 45% off discount. So there’s that option as well.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons- 75% / 80% OFF

Depending upon whether or not you purchase the Xbox One or 360 version, you could save an additional 5%on costs. The two are pretty comparable so if you’re looking to save money then don’t sweat it that much. Brothers is a couple of years old now but no less entertaining, vivid, and moving. It is a narrative and puzzle driven adventure game featuring two brothers as the title would suggest. Definitely an experience to have and appreciate if you enjoy adventure titles and good stories.

Bound By Flame- 75% OFF

Very much an almost Dark Souls RPG enthusiast, Bound By Flame is an entertaining role-playing adventure game that has several interestingly implemented elements. The studio behind it recently created the interesting if flawed Mars RPG called The Technomancer. So if you’re intrigued by the premise of most RPGs and want a heavily discounted adventure title that’s not too shabby, this is probably a game you should look into.

Terraria- 80% OFF

Very much akin to Minecraft in many ways, this adventure indie darling always pops up in the discounted deals section and is still insanely popular. Whether or not you ever tried the PC version, I implore you to at least give the Xbox versions a look. Both the Xbox One and 360 versions are the same discounted price. If you enjoy simulations or adventure and survival games then you should check it out.

I hope this short blog has given you some insight into a few of the best deals you can currently get on Xbox Live right now. If digital downloads aren’t your thing I urge you to reconsider your position, because even despite their pitfalls they can be pretty helpful at times as well. PlayStation Plus has a lot on sale right now and on offer so if you are a PlayStation kind of guy or gal you should head over there as well. And don’t forget to check Humble Bundle and Steam and everything else my fellow PC gaming friends.

The Best Deals With Gold, Week of 14NOV

[As Originally Written on GIO.]

Last week I gave a general heads up to Microsoft console surveyors about Xbox Live -related content and free or discounted games. This week I’m aiming to do the same and to highlight some of the newer deals that have come on down the pipeline as well.

The Escapists- FREE (Until 11/15)

This is one of last month’s Games With Gold and it is still available for roughly another week or so. It may not seem too interesting compared to the newest Call of Duty or Civilizations VI, but this prison sim has its quirks and is truly an entertaining package especially if you invest in some of the downloadable content. Give it a try if you enjoy strategy games or indie tales with black humor involved.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon- FREE (Starting 11/16)

Did you like Far Cry 3? Do you like open world adventure games? Do you like gritty and nuanced science fiction adventures? Are you even human? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may want to check out the standalone downloadable Far Cry adventure that turns komodo dragons into giant laser dinosaurs and enemies into cybernetic juggernauts. I’m not even kidding. Go out there and have some fun wreaking havoc upon their poor souls.

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition- 50% OFF

If you’ve been a longtime fan of the series or you played the DMC reboot a few years ago, this might be an interesting title for you to pick up. As it is, if you enjoy action games or hack and slash adventures it may also be something worthwhile to enjoy. It’s not too heavy on the wallet and it also features the majority of any downloadable content that came with the Demon Hunter Bundle pack all those years ago as well. More content for a lower price is never really a bad thing.

Resident Evil Revelations 2: Deluxe Edition- 60% OFF

If you enjoyed the first game or you’ve enjoyed some of the Resident Evil titles in the past, or perhaps even this game itself, the Deluxe Edition may be for you. It should include the bulk of the episodes- including downloads and extra content as well. After all, it is the vaunted ‘Deluxe’ edition. Sixty percent off is virtually a steal for a game that is pretty damn good in terms of quality gameplay, storytelling, and atmosphere. As a side-note, the season pass for RER2 is also on sale for 60% off.

Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition- 67% OFF

Remember when Tomb Raider (2013) and a bunch of like-minded games all released so-called ‘Definitive Editions’ with the launch of the new console generation? Well this reboot took that approach as well and released the full game with downloads and all with a slight performance and graphics boost as well. And now it’s discounted to nearly one/third the original price. So if you thought it was a good buy to begin with, this is a complete and utter steal. Seriously, you should try the game if you’ve never played the series and you should try it if you want dry wit and mind-bending fun.

Dirt 3 and Dirt Showdown- 75% OFF

If you’re into racing games and racing games that have a plethora of modes then these two titles could be for you. Both are discounted to roughly the same price and both are originally Xbox 360 titles, meaning they’re available for virtual download from the marketplace. In my opinion, Dirt 3 offers the more complete package and Showdown is more of arcade afterthought, however they are both chock full of content and differing modes and it is entirely up to you which to buy or whether you would like both or not.

Darksiders II- 80% OFF

This is quite possibly one of the best deals I’ve seen in a long time, short of completely free titles of course. This game is not only a large and expansive quest but an entirely open and enjoyable world and narrative. The first Darksiders did many things well and the sequel truly only improved upon that formula and added so much more. If you’ve yet to play the game but like action-oriented RPGs and adventure games then you should definitely try it out. As a side-note the season pass is also discounted at an 80% rate.

The Best Deals With Gold, Week of 07NOV

[As Originally Read on GIO.]

Being predominately an Xbox One gamer this generation (although I own plenty of other consoles and doohickies as well), I feel it is only fair I give back helpful information to those of you also gaming on the Microsoft system. Therefore, I will be doing a periodic little rundown of some of the best deals digitally available week to week and month to month on Microsoft’s premium live service, Xbox Gold. I will be including deals and Games With Gold titles as well.

FIFA 17, Madden NFL 17, and NHL 17- 35% OFF

If you are a sports fan and any of these three titles have been appealing to you but you’ve waited awhile to get a good deal on them then you should consider buying now. All three are quality titles and scored fairly well when reviewed here and other places. The order they are listed in is also how I would personally rank them if I were to be buying them right now as well in my honest opinion quality wise.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection- 60% OFF

This is definitely a steal. You can get both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel in the bundle and all of the downloadable content for each game to boot. Not only are the games spectacular (2 more so than the Pre-Sequel) but they are also full of content and good games to dive into if they’ve been in your backlog for some time and you’re looking for a quality story and fun time.

Evolve- 60% OFF

If you’ve ever played Left 4 Dead or Left 4 Dead 2 and you enjoyed the cooperative mayhem then you shouldn’t pass up on giving this monster hunter a try. Although the game has made a push for free to play on other mediums, this is a good price for what content is still supported and has already been released. There’s a lot there and the base game is pretty fun as is even though the player count isn’t quite as high as it initially was.

Red Faction Guerrilla- 85% OFF

This is a last-generation gem and it’s still fun to play even today. It has some quirks at times but is better than the most recent Red Faction game and sequel, Armageddon. The destructibility and sheer size of the Martian world is what makes the game worthwhile and you’ll find it operates as some sort of “GTA in space” at times as well. Definitely give it a thought at this low of a price at least.

The Escapists- FREE

This is one of last month’s Games With Gold and it is still available for roughly another week or so. It may not seem too interesting compared to the newest Call of Duty or Civilizations VI, but this prison sim has its quirks and is truly an entertaining package especially if you invest in some of the downloadable content. Give it a try if you enjoy strategy games or indie tales with black humor involved.

PlayStation Plus has a lot on sale right now and on offer so if you are a PlayStation kind of guy or gal you should head over there as well. And don’t forget to check Humble Bundle and Steam and everything else my fellow PC gaming friends.

What I’ve Been Up To (Again)

Howdy folks, long time no blog…again. Apologies for apologizing and not remedying that the last go round but I will make a more profound attempt in order to do so this time around. What exactly have I been doing lately? Well, working on several projects for starters. Work on the long-time indie little design project I’ve been writing for has been stagnant of late but continues. I’ve been writing for the first real time in a while, so working on two little short stories to boost morale and competency I guess. Still writing reviews and cataloging them for later when I can actually fine-tune and release them. So I may be back to original and old form before too much longer, although beware- from mid-June to mid-July or early August I will be out of country and more than likely not posting much of anything. And of course I’ve also been watching movies, television, and playing plenty of games.

Lately, more than anything I’ve immersed myself once more in the world of The Witcher 3, I’ve revisited Halo 5, and I’ve even dabbled in some sports games here and there. On the shows and movies front I’ve been wrapping up my superhero goodies like Gotham, The Flash, and Arrow. And of course as for films I’ve seen my fair share of the expected ones- Captain America 3 and so forth. Hopefully I’ve not proven to be too boring or mundane, but I shall continue to try to provide content as always, for better or worse.

The Big Ol’ Update of What I’ve been up To

So, long time no blogging. Sorry for the delay between some of the things I’ve been working on. I’ve been pretty busy wrapping up some other working and personal projects, as well as catching up on my fair share of shows for future retro reviews. I’m trying to make this whole deal a more well-rounded media offering although I will always focus heavily on the games aspect of course that it initially began as, alongside writing and whatnot.

So, what’s coming in the next month or so? Well, I’ve been compiling reviews for several seasons of television shows- from American Horror Story to How To Get Away With Murder. I’ve also been busy testing and playing some new releases in terms of games so expect potentially a few reviews or thoughts blogs. And really, just expect continual coverage of all other things I generally work on. So, that’s it for the whole update business. Hope to get back again soon.

Temporary Pause

The site has been on pause for a few months and will continue to be until I can get some semblance of a regular schedule of posts going again. Sorry for that disappointing inconvenience.

Pneuma: Breath of Life (Deco Digital)

One of this month’s Xbox Games With Gold titles is a little-known, slightly indie game conceived by Deco Digital and released February 27, 2015. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 and makes a pretty solid statement where graphics and effects are concerned, even if only in a ‘simplistic’ environment and puzzle-focused game.

If you’re wondering whether or not the game is worth the hassle (or lack thereof) of shelling out the time to download it this month as free title on Xbox Live (for Xbox One), then look no further. Kotaku has a pretty fair review that hits just about all the high points one should need in order to weigh their choices. Here it is.

Sorry for the lack of blogging and reviewing being done here and there, but I’ll be able to get some more done whenever I can here and there. I’ll see you all on the next post.

In Which I Deign it an Appropriate Time to Write a Blog Post Pt. 187/X

[As Read on GIO.]

Aka ‘How I Came to Write about these Random Things Today’

Hello all. I truly hate having to do this every few months it seems like, but here’s my “sorry, I’m back, probably will write some things that may or may not make it to post, probably will end up missing out on activity for a long period again” post. I am the watcher on the wall, the sword in the shadows- so don’t worry, I still skulk about and keep one eye on all of you and the gaming community as a whole, despite not being entirely up to date whereas news and current gaming events may be concerned. My apologies for long delays in response between comments to those of you who have tried to stay in contact as well.

Suffice it to say, I’ve been quite the busy bee this past year and a half or however long its been. I’ve lost track. That’s quite scary. Apologies for foregoing general blogging and grammatical etiquette. Apologies for a lot of unspoken sentiment and a lot of things I’ve been unable to produce lately, blogs included. But you all are a forgiving lot so I’ll assume my presence and livelihood alone are merit enough for your forgiveness, although I do genuinely mean it when I constantly assure you that I will in fact attempt to produce new blogs here and there this year (I’ve still got time after all). So…long time no blog.

I’ll start simply today. I’ll even give you something of a little bit of substance for once, not just a measly few paragraphs after an eight month or so break like the last time. So let’s talk, shall we? As I’ve mentioned, I have in fact been quite busy of late. And although I would’ve never in my life thought I would be too busy to write blogs about one of my truest loves, I have been. A travesty of justice if there ever was one, I know, I really do. But alas, quite a true finding indeed. I have, however, been able to keep some writing going on the side as well as a tad bit of gaming when the opportunity presents itself. So there is that. While I was missing out on one of my continuing dreams (aka game blogging and all things related) and continuing my furthered education, I did manage to bring some things to fruition for the first time in years and realize the first stage of a longtime dream of mine. I’m a published (not self-published, mind you- I don’t count that in this respect although I respect the two equally) author/poet! I will admit however that I did not deign to publish under my own name however so I may, after a time, reveal my ‘Lemony Snicket’-esque pseudonym haha. Have no fear.

This exciting development aside, the past year has been a busy but not always thrilling ride of a time. That’s not to say it has been a poor time, merely a rough, long and eventful one. I mentioned some details of my current plans way back in this blog but in case you don’t recall, I’ll talk a bit more about some of it- leaving out the boring details though. I’m pursuing furthered education in not one, but actually two degrees. Yes, you heard right. At this rate I’ll be in hell, er school, for the rest of my life. But social obligations be damned, am I right? No? Oops. Partial jokes, partial suffering aside, it’s pretty necessary that I undertake said tasks so therefore I have. I’m all for a little work now and a little fun later, as well as mixing the two on occasion. So in order to pursue my ultimate dream of intertwining gaming, writing, art and fun into one massive career, I’ve got to school myself a tad more first.

I have, in other interesting news, also been hard at work on at least one confirmed gaming related project over the past year or so. How I’ve managed to do my part in this as well as school and what few other responsibilities I’ve procured lately, I may never truly know. I may or may not have alluded to said project in the past, I know for sure I did here. But yeah, this particular project at least is an indie one for sure, although that’s not say I don’t have love for it. Who wouldn’t have, after slaving over script and other writings for over a year? So I’ve still got my feelers out there. I’m still making moves and trying to keep myself occupied even if it’s not always as fun and easy going as I would like. I can’t always be on here spending my days and nights commenting, blogging, reviewing, and giving feedback galore- but that’s not to say I don’t completely miss those days (because oh yes I do).

So I’ve relegated myself to a more behind the scenes approach to things in terms of social opportunities of late, but that’s not to say I’m any less interested or up to date. I implore any and everyone who’s still interested in my opinion on matters, getting feedback, or hell who just wants to talk or ask questions to feel free to shoot me messages on here. I’ll always get back to you eventually, just maybe not with the quickest response time. I mean, I haven’t even checked my main email hooked up to this account in ages, so I can only imagine the horrible amounts of info on there. All things considered, I do genuinely hope I can be better about responses and general acknowledgement of questions in the future. I promise I haven’t gotten too big for my britches and I’m not going to ignore you. Well, unless you spam me and are annoying, then you may be the last response I send. (Joking, of course…or am I?)

On the subject of reviews, I’ve found myself mentally reviewing things a lot and even written some notes down for actual reviews to be made, however I’ve just not had the stomach for actual writing of said reviews for whatever reason these past few months. Maybe there’s a disease out there for that I honestly wouldn’t know. It’s probably some sort of phase similar to writer’s block or some other horribly inconvenient trend. Alas, I fear it may not change in the near future, but I can assure you I’ll try to be on the ball enough so that if the moment presents itself and the drive and fire are still there, I will be sure to pick up pen and paper and slave away on more masterpieces for your heart’s content, or rather game content as it may be. I will definitely find time to be on the ball about blog posting, if not reviews as well.

Now to the point where I briefly discuss games, gaming, and news regarding anything akin to either of those therein. At least before I depart anyway.

As of late, I’ve not so much purchased many new games per se as I have instead gone back and revisited well-trod, older worlds and realms. There’s merit to be found in both experiences and while I am all for new games, I’m saving money and simply enjoying the old instead. That’s not to say I’m not looking out for the hottest titles in beloved series or maybe even that one shining new IP, but for the past few months to a year I’ve focused mainly on finishing my woefully large backlog of games that I touched but never showed truer love to. Of course I’ve also looked to guilty pleasures and nostalgic trips as well, returning to the blasphemous calls of duty and galloping across the barren wastes of many borderlands and post apocalyptic fallout zones as well. And yes, those were all allusions and puns of sorts, hate me if you will.

It’s been real, but now’s as good a time to bow out as any. For those of you still keeping up with my blogs, woeful few though there are, I thank you. And for those of you still as of yet new to the site, welcome, and welcome to my deranged and demented mind-space as well. Enjoy your stay and try not to get too terribly caught up and bewildered by my ever-conversational and grammatically inept approach to writing. Ciao.

It’s Been a Long While…

[As Read on GIO.]

Not a ‘Hello I’m Back’ and not a ‘Goodbye for Good’

It’s hard to believe I haven’t posted a single blog since September of 2014 and even before then my blog posting and reviews had been sporadic at best throughout the entire previous year. I’ve been a pretty busy individual of late and that’s actually only going to get worse as I have much work ahead of me this spring and into summer. So although I would like to say I am coming back and will be posting much more regularly, this is in fact not the case. But I did want to drop by and assure you all that yes, I am in fact alive, and also that I have still kept up with the gaming world. Even if I am so far inadequately prepared to discuss some of the major titles coming out soon, and woefully ill-equipped to review a few others that have already released.

So what exactly have I been doing to occupy my time of late? Well, quite simply: schooling myself. Or rather being schooled…by school. Yes, I’ve gone back. Hard to believe? I don’t blame you- I mean what sane individual in their right mind would do that to themselves right? Jokes aside, you can probably read back through some old comments and whatnot for the details, but I’ve gone back for some even higher, higher education. And it’s been totally worth the pain and torture and social suicide thus far haha.

So, short and sweet though this is, this is still just an update for you all to prove I’m still here in some capacity even if I’m gone in most others. I’ll try to get back to blogging here and there infrequently but I really can’t make any promises whatsoever. It’s good to see things still up and running even if there have been changes and challenges along the way. Ciao friends.
